IEEE Region 5 Student Circuit Design Competition

The Student Electronic Circuit Design Contest is sponsored by the IEEE Region 5 Committee. This contest provides a specific technical problem for a student team to solve. The conference can support a maximum of 12 student teams, with those teams being determined on a first-come-first-serve based on time of registration. (See below for registration details.)

Join our Region 5 Discord Server to stay up to date with the Competitions!  Please contact theIEEE Region 5 Student Activities Chair if you have any issues with joining.

Eligibility: The Student Circuit Design Competition invites the IEEE Student Branches and Eta Kappa Nu Chapters at universities throughout IEEE Region 5.

  • Each Student Branch may send one team composed of two or three undergraduate students for the competition.
  • Team substitutions are at the discretion of the competition chair.
  • The students must register for the IEEE Region 5 Student Conference Circuits Competition. (See below.)
  • The students must be a current or pending IEEE or IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu member.

Competition Concepts

The following concepts would be “good-to-know” to participate in the competition:

  • Op-amps,
  • Diodes,
  • Potentiometers,
  • Filtering,
  • Analog Mixers,
  • Up-and-Down Conversion,
  • Antennas

Contact Information

Contact the Student Circuit Design Competition Chair, Jeff Dix, for assistance with your Team’s intent to compete as described below.

Intent to Compete and Registration

Each team MUST complete the online Intent to Compete form (below) to declare their intention to participate.

Intent to Compete

The first team to register from each student branch will have priority unless otherwise designated by the branch counselor. Other teams from the same university may be allowed as space permits.

Team and Student Registration

Each student on a team planning to participate in the competition must register on the IEEE Region 5 Conference website. When you register, you will be asked whether you are a member of a team competing In a Student Competition; if so, which competition, and which team. Please use the Team Name that was submitted on the Intent to Compete form.

Event Timeline

  • Students will leave the hotel at 8:30AM and arrive at competition site by 9:00 am Saturday April 6, 2024.
  • An introduction and Q&A will finish at 9:15 am.
  • Students will work until 2:00 pm. Lunch will be provided and staff will be available to answer questions.
  • Judges will visit your workbench between 2:00 and 3:00 pm.
  • Students return to hotel at 3:00 pm.

Competitors should be prepared to work with analog and digital electronics, and/or with microprocessors.

At the start of the competition, each team will receive

  • A set of parts and breadboards
  • The design goal and grading rubric,
  • Access to test and measurement equipment, wire, tools, and breadboards to design their circuit.

When the competition ends, teams will demonstrate their designs and be evaluated using the rubric.

Space is limited. The competition registration will close when the available space for twelve (12) teams is filled, but your team must be registered no later than 12:00 am CDT (Arkansas time), March 15, 2024.
