The year is 2047. After GRID successfully deflected asteroids from comet 2047-5-L1, it was discovered that they contained valuable materials, Geodinium and Nebulite. Your team’s rover is recruited to quickly collect these Astral Materials before the asteroids sail off into space, never to be seen again. Your robot touches down with T-3 minutes till the point of no return, so you have to collect as many astral materials as possible, put them into cosmic shipping containers, and bring them to the rendezvous pad communicated from the telemetry. There are also reports of a strange geographical feature like a cave… With the amazing materials your robot collects, the world will be able to build new technologies never seen before!

Eligibility

The Student Cyber Challenge invites the IEEE Student Branches and IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu Chapters at universities to compete. The competition encourages a multidisciplinary approach to robot development and recognizes the participation of students who may already be members of SAE, ASME, EEGS, etc. Teams may not include any graduate students. The teams must submit their Intent to Compete form to be eligible to compete.

  • Team Size: 2+ students
  • Maximum number of teams: 25

There is no limit on the maximum team size but due to space limitations at the competition, only 5 team members are allowed at the team’s assigned work table (“Pit Area” – see Game Manual 1).

There are two classes of competitions:

1. R5 Competition:

  • Teams whose members are enrolled in a college or University within the IEEE Region 5 boundaries.

2. Open Competition:

  • Teams whose members are enrolled in a college or University anywhere in the world.

  • High School teams may compete in this open competition as well but will need adhere to additional requirements if the team members are under the age of 18. Contact the Robotics Competition Chair for more details.

  • R5 Awards are not available for these teams.

Teams are selected from the submitted pool on a first come first served basis. Selected teams will be notified to register for the R5 conference and participate in the competition. Team substitutions are at the discretion of the competition chair.

The first team from each school to submit an Intent to Compete form will be given preference and subsequent teams submitting an Intent to Compete form from that school will be waitlisted.

Rules & Guidelines

The Student robotics Competition will be conducted and judged according to the rules document posted below on the R5 Discord Server (see registration link below). The most current information will always be provided on the R5 Discord Server so all teams should register to access this server. The teams interested in contesting should review the rules in advance.

As with the previous years, the robotics competition rules are subject to modification under required circumstances. To keep up-to-date with any such changes please fill out the Intent to Compete to receive email updates or join the IEEE R5 discord group.

The robotics competition is open to all attendees. However, the attendees and the student participants should not intervene with the robot, field judge or the contesting team in any form, that includes photography, video recording etc., The field judge has the right to ban any activity that is deemed interfering with the competition process.

Student Registration

If you are interested in competing as a Team:

  • You must complete the Intent to Compete form to declare your intention to participate by the Intent to Compete Deadline.
  • If you are notified that your team has been accepted to attend the R5 Student Competitions in person, your team members must Register for the conference by the Student Competition Registration Deadline or your team may be removed from the competition and any waitlisted teams will be given the opportunity to compete in your place.

See Registration for information on the registration fees.
