The student competitions are open to all undergraduate IEEE student members who are attending a school in Region 5. Typically, the competitions are:
IEEE Region 5 Student Ethics Competition
The Universities are invited to register a Two-Student Team to compete in the IEEE Region 5 Student Ethics Competition. The Ethics Competition is hosted by IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu leaders. The student team will be challenged to consider an ethical situation they might face during their careers. The details of the situation to be considered are provided to the teams on the morning of competition. The teams will make a prepared response with recommended actions to the situation. Teams must complete the Intent to Compete Form and register for the IEEE Region 5 Student Conference. Read more for details >>
IEEE Region 5 Student Circuit Design
The Universities are invited to register a Two-Student Team to compete in the IEEE Region 5 Circuit Design Competition. The student team will be challenged to solve a technical problem provided to the teams on the day of competition. Teams must complete the Intent to Compete Form and register for the IEEE Region 5 Student Conference. Read more for details >>
IEEE Region 5 Student Robotics Competitions
The Universities are invited to send Student Teams to compete in the IEEE Region 5 Robotics Competition. The student team will be challenged to build autonomous robots within the competition rules and guidelines. The competition will use a point system with the winning team receiving the highest number of points. Details may be found in the official competition rules. IEEE Region 5 Student Poster Competition
IEEE Region 5 invites undergraduate students at IEEE Student Branches and Eta Kappa Nu Chapters to submit a top-ranked poster at their university to their local IEEE Section by Dec 15, 2020, for participation at the area level and region level poster competitions. Posters addressing technical, engineering, management, or societal aspects of any subjects relevant to science, engineering and technology are invited. The top three posters from each R5 area will be selected based on virtual oral presentations to advance to the R5 region competition by Feb 15, 2021. The competition at the region level will take place at the R5 conference among 12 area poster winners (3 per 4 areas of R5). Note that in 2021, the region level competition will be conducted virtually.
Only one author of each of the selected area posters can compete in the IEEE Region 5 Regional Poster Competition 10 April 2021 by making a (virtual) oral presentation and answering 5 minutes of questions about the poster. Read more for details >>

If any Individual Awards are made by R5, a W-8 (foreign person) or W-9 (US person) withholding form is required by the IEEE Region 5 Treasurer prior to disbursement to individual winners. These individual student winners should be prepared to provide their Tax ID number. Please use the IEEE forms at https://www.ieee.org/about/volunteers/tax-administration/related_info.html. The winners must provide their current mailing address.
